Physical Description:
Remus is strikingly pale; the closer that it gets to the full moon, the more that pallor has a sheen of grey to it. Light blue eyes conspire to make him seem even more washed-out; those eyes are wide and turned down at the corners, framed by short thick lashes and heavy eyebrows. A large nose and thin lips combined with those eyes mean that he will never be handsome, that ‘cute’ is the best he could hope for. His sandy brown hair grows quickly, and no matter how often he cuts it, it always seems to be falling into his face. Slope-shouldered and skinny, Remus still looks more like an awkward teenager than a young man.

History:
When Allegra Mirbolt got engaged to Jonathan Lupin, it caused quite a stir within her family. After all, the Mirbolts may not have been a powerful family or a rich one, but they were a very old, very pureblooded one. The idea of the eldest daughter of the clan throwing herself away on a Muggleborn was met with nothing less than horror; only her younger sister attended the wedding, and several days later an Owl came with the news that Allegra had been disowned. Quiet and determined, Allegra refused to publicly flinch; after all, John’s high position in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures paid well enough to support them both. Still, when her son was born, the witch gave him a family name.

It looked like the infant Remus’s life was destined to be a charmed one. While not wealthy by any means, his young parents could certainly provide almost anything a child might need or want, and the family was nothing if not rich in love. The Lupins doted on their son. He was bright, learning to walk and speak months earlier than most of his peers, and he seemed like a happy child.

All of that changed the summer Remus was five years old.

Jonathan had risen to a high position in the Ministry largely through vocal support of measures meant to severely restrict the rights of sentient non-humans such as vampires, hags, and werewolves. Simultaneously, a young werewolf named Fenrir Greyback was becoming infamous as an often violent advocate of the rights of Dark Creatures. Threats were often part and parcel of a job at the Ministry, and so when warnings from Greyback began crossing his desk, John ignored them.

That summer, the Lupin family took a holiday to the south of France. It was there that the small Remus, playing in a back garden one evening, was found by Greyback and bitten.

The charmed life disappeared instantly. Remus was rushed to a French Wizarding hospital, where his life was barely saved. Jonathan, knowing well the sort of future that a young werewolf could expect based on some of the legislation that he himself had authored, insisted that nobody at home be told what happened. Unable to reconcile his job with his conscience, barely able to reconcile his love for his son with his opinions on Dark creatures, Jonathan had something of a nervous breakdown and lost his job at the Ministry before Remus turned six. Eventually he got a much lower-level job in a totally different department, but things were never the same for the family financially after that.

The remainder of Remus’s childhood was spent almost entirely in secret. His father insisted that he not go out, not associate with others, not risk exposure in any way. He was tutored by his mother and stayed almost exclusively inside or in the back yard of their tiny house; he spent his formative years friendless. And of course there were the monthly appearances of the wolf, violent experiences that left the small boy ill and weak.

Still, he was a wizarding child, and on his eleventh birthday he received a Hogwarts letter. Jonathan nixed the notion right away, but Allegra, seeing her son grow increasingly sad and faded with each passing day, ignored her husband’s protests and wrote to Dumbledore with every detail of the problem. She hardly dared hope…but the return Owl was better than she could have dreamed. Remus was to go to school, was to be provided for and kept safe. His secret would be protected. He had a chance to live as a normal boy- or at least as normal as possible.

Remus was painfully excited about the prospect of Hogwarts, but the moment he stepped onto the train he found that he had absolutely no idea how to respond to his peers. He was shy and awkward, and the boys in his compartment began to tease him almost immediately. Fortunately, he was a clever boy, and well-read due to his years kept inside; he managed to come up with a few witty, if nervous, retorts, and soon enough the other boys took pity on him. Sirius Black, James Potter, and Peter Pettigrew weren’t exactly his friends, at first, but they seemed to feel that he was theirs to pick on or not pick on as they so chose, and so they sort of absorbed him into their group. By the end of their first year, Remus had calmed down enough to earn their respect, although his was too quiet a nature to fully keep up with their pranks and mischief. Desperate to be liked, he did what he could, and soon the friendships were stable enough.

He would never be sure how the other boys found out his secret, but the fact that they became animagi on his behalf was the most precious gift he would ever receive. He may even have cried a bit, under the protection of his bed curtains and covers and a silencing spell.

Remus was always bright, though not brilliant. He got good marks in his classes as long as he studied a bit, something that wasn’t really a hardship for him. The only class where he truly stood out was Defense Against the Dark Arts. A Gryffindor prefect in his last three years at school, Remus always felt a little guilty about shirking his duties in regard to his friends, but he wanted too much to keep their respect and affection to ever exercise his powers against them.

With Voldemort’s rise to power, the already serious and quiet young man withdrew further into himself. He hated what was going on on a lot of fundamental levels, but he couldn’t do anything, and so he retreated into himself in a lot of ways. He joined the Order the moment the opportunity was offered, without hesitation. Still, the whole thing makes him incredibly nervous, and while he wants to be a force of good in the world, he has no idea how to go about it and often feels inadequate, especially next to his friends.

Personality:
Remus is shy, quiet, and mild. He’s more than a little awkward in social situations unless he’s close to everyone in question. He’s well-read and extremely articulate when he wants to be, but he doesn’t often speak up. He has no temper to speak of…until the pressure becomes too extreme, and then he snaps with all fury of the wolf. One of his coping mechanisms for dealing with the wolf inside of him has been to become very cerebral; he spends a lot of time thinking about things and not a lot of time acting on them, and he prefers to ignore his emotions, always doing his best to remain mild and pleasant no matter what he’s feeling underneath the surface. Remus is always eager to please and desperate to be liked and to retain the affection of those who do care about him; he can never quite get it through his head that they’ll continue to care about him even if he’s not the perfect friend all of the time.

(Disclaimer: I'm obviously not really Remus Lupin, nor do I own him. If I did, there would probably be a lot more boysex in HP. I'm just sayin'. I am also not Sondre Lerche, and I don't own him either- more's the pity. Look, if you sue me, you'll have to sue half of LJ and all of GJ too, so please don't. If you want my real lj, it's at [info]pixiechan.)
